Pelagios Kakunjá

Dr. Mauricio Hoyos Padilla is a Mexican marine biologist and one of the world’s most recognized voices in shark research and conservation. He is the director and co-founder of Pelagios Kakunjá, an organization dedicated to studying migratory marine species, and has devoted more than three decades to monitoring, protecting, and raising scientific awareness about sharks in Mexico and the Eastern Pacific.

In 2026, he received the National Geographic/Buffett Award for Leadership in Conservation, presented by the National Geographic Society to outstanding leaders for their impact on conservation. His work combines field research, tracking technology, environmental education, and applied conservation, promoting a more responsible relationship between people, tourism, and the ocean.
